I am just old enough to remember having a fitting with one of these when I was a small kid. Now I work with X-rays, and I'm glad they're banned!

I remember doing this with my mom and siblings. We would have the first x-ray with the salesman and mom, and then while he was fitting one of us, the rest of us would take turns x- raying our feet, many, many times...no wonder we all ended up with arthritis!!!

It doesn’t mention Australia (why not?), but I remember these machines from my childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. Nobody ever seemed to worry about how much radiation our feet were exposed to!

I've never heard of these. What a brilliant idea, in theory at least. Shame about the radiation

Player Teresa611, at 1.2m high, I would be more concerned about how much leaking radiation your most sensitive (to radiation) organs were exposed to.

How fascinating. l come from St Albans and I'm old, but had never heard of this machine or had my feet x-rayed in one. Interestingly, the small town of St Albans, had at least 5 shoe shops that I recall, growing up.

I enjoyed these several times as a boy, more than 60 years ago… still no arthritis at age 74.

Player #9956654, We don't think the fluoroscopes caused the arthritis. Could be wrong, but we have never heard of such an instance.

My father was a radiologist and was horrified that such an unshielded source of radiation was right in the middle of the shoe store. Of course, we weren't allowed to use it, and it was pretty short lived in the store.
