Everybody should be taught this. Do not try ever to fight the current back; you will get exhausted and drown. Go with the flow, wait until it leaves you and swim in diagonal back to shore. In unknown or unpredictable waters always take a floating table (Morey Boogie) with you.

A few years ago while frolicking in the Atlantic, I noticed I was floating out alongside the pier. Fortunately, I had seen news stories about swimming parallel to the beach so I was fine. Unfortunately, that particular beach loses about 8 people a year due to rip currents. There are many signs on beaches with diagrams explaining the crucial acts one should do. Folks, READ THE SIGNS!

In Australia please swim only at one of our many lifeguard patrolled beaches and always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Swim or diving fins also help but even with fins on follow the advice given here.
