unicorn 54, yes they are beautiful and the only birds that can also fly backwards too! Kingfishers are lovely colourful birds too

linkstamer
If the smallest weigh 2.4 grams and largest about 4.5, wouldn't the average weight be closer to 3.5 grams ?

dollis1963, A gram is a metric unit of measure roughly equivalent to 1/28 of an ounce. Yeah, by itself, one gram of anything isn't very much.

SOS
Player #96919, I believe they are also the only birds that can fly upside down too. I would love to see one, I don't think we have them in Australia.

Yessum
They use all that muscle to flap their wings 50-80 times per second. I remember watching slowed down footage (before the technology of slo-mo) of a hummingbird hovering and its wings were still blurry! And while its wings were furiously beating its body was perfectly still!

Pitchalady
We have two feeders and three hummingbirds visit us each summer. One of them is extremely territorial. The bird chases the others away from the feeders. I have read that when a hummingbird attacks, it uses its beak to stab the eyes of the other bird. They mean business!

I never cease to be amazed at the diversity of nature..

Wow, that's about the weight of half a teaspoon of sugar.

A 2.5 gram bird lays 1.4 gram egg.Great!!!

Player #31268168
linkstamer, that would be the median

Pazuzu
That's not plausible. There must be a muddle up in the conversion of units (US/ISO).

linkstamer, Ha - yes it would be!

linkstamer,
You can’t calculate that without knowing how many birds are at each weight.
