My absolute favourite bird! For something so small, they are amazing little creatures. I look forward to their return every year. Such a shame they are now under threat, as newer build houses give them nothing to build their nests on and some countries like to catch and eat them as a delicacy!

Regarding the so-called screaming parties, my theory is that they're simply playing. When Swifts whizz about like that with such speed and apparent delight, calling out to each other, issuing challenges and racing around together, it seems obvious they are just having a ball. And sometimes if you're sat outside quietly near where this is all going on, they'll swoop down close as if showing off. It makes sense. If I could fly with such speed and agility it's what I'd be doing.
