Roxana Ioana Costin, there was a fire in Pestigo, WI at the same time. it was so fierce that it jumped the bay to door county and continued to burn. The streets were made of sawdust and it dried up the river that everyone had sought to find shelter in. we call it the "Forgotten Fire" because it was shadowed in the news by the Chicago Fire

Mrs O’Leary’s cow. And now you know the rest of the story. (That’s the legend anyway).

On the same night 250 miles north the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin happened. It is the deadliest forest fire in U.S. history. 1,200 + perished, 17 towns, 2 billion trees, 1,200,000 acres. Trees literally exploded from the heat. Had to let y'all know that.

What a horrible responsibility to live with. I know accidents do happen. Especially house and barn fires were more common in those days due to use of candles and oil laterns

Enola, what a fascinating bit of family history. Glad your GGrandfather was so quick!

Enola
My family was in the fire. My great grandfather carried the kids a block, go back and get the trunk with their few belongings and carry it 2 blocks, then go back for the kids and kept doing that to outrun the fire.
I still have that camelback trunk.
I have several audiobooks that are about the great fire. I've read nonfiction about it. It's really interesting to read fiction too, that bring the dynamics to life while remaining historically accurate.
