What is a unique feature of some species of horned lizards?
Correct answer: They can squirt a stream of blood from the corners of the eyes

Timoteo
We used to play with these as a kids in the panhandle of Texas. We would tie a 3ft piece of thread around their horns and lead them around like a little dog on a leash. We would turn them on their back and gently stroke their tummy until they fell asleep. When we were finished playing with them, we would turn them loose on a nearby red ant bed and watch them chow down. Amazing animals!

Use to see them in a vacant lot next to our home in San Antonio. Last time I saw one was in Big Bend. They are rare today. They eat harvester ants which the fire ants have decimated.

"When a horned lizard feels threatened by a predator, its final defense response is to shoot blood from these flooded sinuses and out its eye sockets. As a result, the predator is often frightened and flees. The lizard also uses this mechanism to remove foreign particles from the surface of its eyes"
