Unali 58, my daughter wore her birthstone to school in the form of an earring and it exploded during class. we since learnt they need to be handled. The oils from our hands help prevent breakage. I wish I knew how to read comments later. Unali 58 will never see this.

Unali 58, I keep my gemstones in a cloth treated with mineral oil when I'm not wearing them. Prior to wearing, I clean them in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner using only distilled water and a couple drops of liquid dish detergent, (I use Dawn if you're Stateside) then return to the box with the oiled cloth. ZERO problems! I hope that helps.

hedgehog, treat your gemstones with mineral oil! That's what I use. They're stored in a cloth treated with mineral oil. I use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner using only distilled water and a couple drops of dish liquid ( I prefer Dawn if you're in the States), clean and dry before I wear them, then return them back to it's box with the oiled cloth. Hope that helps!
