GraceSpace, In FL. We have our regulars who come every Spring & then migrate usually sometime in September. They are adorable & a joy to watch. They are also fiercely competitive!!

wesley, My husband was a bird keeper at the Memphis zoo. He described their eggs more like the size of baby peas. Hummingbirds like to nest near hawks or other birds of prey. The hummies are too small and too fast for the hawks to mess with, and the hawks keep the squirrels and other predators away from their nests.

Andy, 600 MILES nonstop. that is nearly a thousand kilometers. 22 hour flight. Don't quite know how they can do it nonstop as their elevated metabolism requires constant food supply and intake.

I live in Washington USA, and we keep feeders out year round. We have to refill them daily in winter ( occasional snow and freezing ) They are great at watching for me to 'do my duty ' and are right there to feed as soon as I get done! Such amazing creatures to observe !

I learned in a forest ranger talk that each bird has to visit about a thousand flowers a day. The eggs are about the size of jelly beans. Once the eggs hatch, the male bird goes far away so the female has easier access to flowers.

I was hoping he’d tell us about the migration itself: places, distances routes, etc. Most of us know the reasons why migration occurs.

I also live in Washington state. We have Anna hummingbirds who live in our backyard year-round and we have a special hummingbird feeder that we plug-in to keep it from freezing during the winter time. It’s worked out really well. You can look for it online. About a week ago the Rufous hummingbirds showed up as they always do after their long migration and have aggressively taken charge of two of our several feeders. They’re all pretty entertaining as they battle for domination. The girls just want to hang out, but the boys do what boys do— stake out their territory.
