We did a short cruise on the Severn, under The Iron Bridge. It is the icon of the English Industrial age. Amazing inventions from "Spinning Jenny" to the locomotives and many more. Exciting era. 🧡

Absolutely amazing given they didn't have computers to figure it all out or cranes to erect it!

Simon, My mothers ancestors lived in Madeley Wood, the original name for the town. The bridge was something of a joke at first, but gradually outsiders applied "Ironbridge" to the town, as well. At some point it was made official, but when they filled in the census every 10 years, the family still wrote down their birthplaces as 'Madeley'.

The bridge is constructed using the type of joints usually used in carpentry such as mortice and tenon as rivets and metal joints were unknown when the bridge was built

Player Say what!?, Engineers used mathematics and other computing devices to design it and a type of crane did exist in those days

Simon
Not just "an iron bridge", THE Iron Bridge 😄 as it was at the time.
