Since the city was founded in the early 1500s, the Quezaltepeque volcano (AKA San Salvador volcano) has erupted at least three times: 1575 1658-71 (an eruption that lasted 4 years known as El Playón eruption. 1917 All three eruptions were mild, as opposed to the violent eruption believed to have occurred in the year 800 AD, which literally blew up the mountain, giving it its current shape. This eruption must've been akin to the St. Helens eruption in 1980.
