from Michigan, USA. Taking someone on a "snipe hunt" was sending them on a "wild goose chase", no such critter hereabouts.

I understand they are difficult to shoot in flight, and in shooting circles if you do hit one you wear the feathers in your hat to show you are a good shot. this is where I believe the word " sniper" comes from ?
