The reason people say ‘bless you’ when a person sneezes goes back to the Middle Ages when the Plague (the Black Death) was prevalent. Sneezing could be a symptom of the Plague, so they said ‘bless you’ meaning ‘may God save and protect you from the Plague’.
In the old nursery rhyme ‘Ring-a-ring-a-rosy’, it says ‘a-tishoo, a-tishoo, they all fall down’. This is another reference to sneezing as a symptom of the Plague. They all fall down a d die from it.
