I have read in a study by neuroscientists that humans do create new brain cells. However, as we age, we tend to lose more than we gain. One way to ameliorate this loss is to play brain games, such as chess, word puzzles, and a game like this one.

Neurons are called "lifetime cells" because they don't get old, die, and get constantly replaced like other cells in the body. Most, except those destroyed by alcohol or brain trauma, will be there until death. It's been fairly recently discovered that there is neurogenesis in adults, taking place mostly in the amygdala and the olfactory bulb, and that most new neurons go to areas involving memory. Neuroscience is a fast-moving field of study with new information coming out often.
