Who were the first climbers to have reached the summit of Mount Everest?
Correct answer: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay

Hillary was an incredibly generous and humble man who became famous for climbing Everest but, IMO, was a hero for what he did afterwards. The first climber to give credit to and actually care about the Sherpas. It's an incredibly dangerous profession and there was no provision to help the families of the many who died or were injured. He set up schools, hospitals and scholarships for them and was activly helping right to the end of his life. RIP Ed.

Not to take anything away from their amazing achievement, but there is growing circumstantial evidence that George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were the first to reach Everest in 1924. It was 75 years later that Mallory's body was found frozen, preserved on the icy mountain. It's unclear whether he died going up or coming back. The pair were last seen 245 m from the summit. It's also estimated that around 200 bodies still remain on around Everest today.

Tincantitan1,
I don’t think there is evidence concerning Mallory and Irvine, just speculation

Why is it called Mt. Everest though. The people who live around it call it Sagarmatha. This should be what we call it.

I guessed this one with the 50/50. I'm not a mountain climber and never will be. Debby

Player #2047250, I worked with Sir Edmund in the 70s at Sears. He was a sweet, thoughtful and caring man. He not only helped the sherpas, he brought aid to the people in the community around Mount Everest. He would spend six months at home in Auckland and six months in Nepal for many years. It was a privilege to work with him.

No, and Hillary was not named after sir, Edmund Hillary call mom as she said. She was born before he became famous.

Tincantitan1, why someone would want to do this is absolutely beyond me. It seems like a game of sharp stick in the eye followed by Russian Roulette.
