According to legend, which Greek mathematician shouted "Eureka" after solving a problem in his bathtub?
Correct answer: Archimedes

Jaypoon
I wonder what happened to the goldsmith!

I am not a number.
Eureka meaning "I have found it", i.e found the solution to the problem.

Oh, now I have to get rid of the mental image of a crazy Greek running through the streets, bath towel flapping . . .

Bamse, you're right that it's about the volume of water displaced but it is also about the density of the object being tested. Gold is more dense than silver, so has a lower volume for the same weight. If an object which is said to be gold weighs 100g then you might expect it to displace 50mls, whereas silver might displace 75mls (examples only).

Jaypon. He and his wife were exiled out of the city they lived in for cheating on the amount of gold used for the crown. A neighbor turned them in for the elegant lifestyle they began living with the extra gold. True fact.

had anyone confirmed that the 1st words he yelled was eureka? If it was confirmed then I'm thinking Archimedes may have had a stalker?

I always thought the Goldsmith had mixed lead with the gold. Lead and gold mix very easily. I watched one day in a lab when a man said he did not believe that gold would dissolve in lead, so he dropped his wedding ring into a solder pot. He never got the ring back. I often wondered how he explained that to his wife.

Bamse, higher density means the same amount takes less space. think of a snowball. light sticky snow. it's a baseball size. but if it's squeezed down to a smaller size, it's very hard. denser, but same volume of snow.

Bamse
How can the density make the difference of water displacement!? The volume does it!

Jaypoon, He wasn't around very long!

Jaypoon, Don't wanna know.

Hello
I don't know why he is solving a mathematical problem in his bathtub while bathing

DavidKing
Jaypoon, one can only guess. But I suppose those were no nonsense times and pulling that kind of shtik could only lead to one inevitable consequence.

And probably got the "Silversmith killed

Jaypoon, good question!

I immediately heard the character Larry from the show Numb3rs yelling out “Archimedes” when he solved a problem when remembering this exact story about the mathematician. Love that Peter McNichol.

"eureka" I've found the answer to this question ◉‿◉

Jaypoon, he died...

Bamse, that doesn't make sense to me either
