If the queen bee dies then the workers feed some eggs royal jelly. when the first one hatches it sends out a call and all of the other queen bees, ready or not. come out and fight each other. Last one alive is the new queen.

The worker bees are all female. The male bees, drones, are only good for reproduction. In the fall if the bees don't have enough honey for the winter then the workers throw the drones out. It they won't go the workers rip their wings off.
