Saffron is a very bright orange (almost red color) but when you add it to water it dyes the water and food (usually rice) you are cooking with yellow.
It is also one of the most expensive spices in the world, because each crocus flower only grows 2 small stamens (sprigs) of saffron in the center and they have to be hand picked.

I was on a Carribean cruise several years ago and the chef said he used saffron in his pocket to attract women. He wasn't an attractive man so maybe that explains why my married friend had a crush on him... ick!

SeventhAverage4, Yes Indians use it, but Iranian use it more. Plus there is no connection of poors using turmeric. In Indian cuisine saffron is used occasionally but turmeric almost every time. Turmeric is one of the most common ingredient due to its antibacterial properties. Saffron is used for very gentle flavouring. So turmeric is not used as a substitute to saffron.

Turmeric is a root, super cheap, whereas saffron is a very delicate part which grows in the crocus flower, super expensive.
