In having Bipolar 1, it's very important to have a psychiatrist to prescribe meds. Also it is very important to have support from family and friends.

My mother was diagnosed as bipolar in her 60s. She would order items from catalogs during her manic phase. She would sleep when she was depressed. She worked as an RN and was beloved by her patients.

I have bipolar disorder, I have really manic episodes that can be frightening for my family, I spent time in an adolescent psychiatric unit when I was 16 due to a really bad episode which was then followed by really bad depression at one point I was hallucinating and thought I had seen my grandad whom I have never met and had died before I was born I have also seen chickens run across the living room, I have medication for my condition and thankfully I have an amazing partner to support me, I describe the depressive side as like hibernation and the manic side is like a kid that won’t sleep and run riot

sue, they are not the same thing. People with schizophrenia have very different symptoms, which can include hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thoughts. My uncle had it.

It's very important to note that many people who are "coming down" from methamphetamines also exhibit very similar symptoms to Bi-Polar, and many times are misdiagnosed, especially in under served and low income populations.

Talking from a personal experience with a family friend : People who have used drugs and went on rehab are often misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder ! Taking drugs do affect the brain chemistry ! But when drugs are stop the meds are not needed ! So careful if you have a loved one diagnosed with bipolar after rehab ! If they where not bipolar before..they probably aren’t ! They will be better off without the meds ! With the meds the will power to stop is erased ! !
