I lived in Carlsbad for 8 years in the late 80’s, early 90’s. You could only take the elevator to go up from the caverns to the visitor center. You walked into the caverns from the natural entrance. There were exceptions. The park had a concession at the bottom of the caverns where you could eat lunch. They sold sandwiches and fried chicken that was prepared above ground. It’s a very interesting spot to visit.

Went there when I was 10 or 11 in the 50’s. Mom and dad, my sister and I all enjoyed it. There was a cafeteria then, but no mention of it here. Does anyone know if it’s still there. Loved it!!
Fascinating!! I would love to go again. I just turned 80, but I could handle it, lol.
