I still remember going into San Francisco to shop and getting in the elevator. An elevator operated it. He/she made sure the floor of the elevator was level with the floor of the building before allowing anyone to get on or off the elevator. you has to tell him/her what floor or department you wanted so ge/she could get you there. Elevator operators needed good hearing and good memories to hear several people call out the destination all at the same time as they got on the elevator.

Elevators have been around since the Colliseum but were man powered. Steam and electric power came about in 1800's.
