If you ever visit, don't get tempted to pick up anything. You're being watched.

Ran away from home in high school with a couple buddies in a '63 Chevy Impala - headed for L.A. from Tulsa, OK - took a side trip to this petrified forest. It was great. Memories I'll never forget. Made it to Los Angeles & learned the grass ain't no greener, etc.; Best cheese burger I ever ate at a place called "Norm's" on Sunset Blvd. Would have been 1970 or 71 - Anybody remember it?

WaldoLydeker, I went when I was a kid in the 50s. And I was able to pick up and bring home a nice sample. Things change.

WaldoLydeker, same goes for Crater of the Moon National Monument in Eastern Idaho. Our Geology class was told to leave our rock hammers, loupe and knives in the vehicles, not to bend over to tie our boots and to not take any samples in the park. We could take pictures of formations, but nothing from the park.

So they say of the time period, or could it be from The Flood? I was there when I was young. Amazing place. BTW, my opinion says, “The Flood”!

it's illegal to take anything from national or state parks. it is a park designed for All to enjoy. if they let people take stuff, there wouldn't be anything left for others to see & enjoy.

Great Natl Park. Old piece of Route 66 is there. When I was a kid, I thought a petrified forest would have standing trees, not ones laying on their side. Ha ha

Unfortunately way too many people have taken way too many souvenirs and depleted a lot of what must have been very incredible

justjen1230, As you drive by on the interstate, you can see huge petrified logs just on the other side of the barbed wire fence. The gift shops sell pieces, for an absorbent amount of money.
