What would a doctor be doing to you if they were checking you for Westphal's Sign?

Once my doctor stood too close while checking my reaction... So I accidentally 'Westphaled' him in the shin. Wasn't impressed but had a good laugh later.

It's also an important test when assessing pregnant women with preeclampsia. Hyperreflexia is a strong indicator of preeclampsia.

It's been my experience this test is done routinely to check for a number of neurological issues. In my 67 years, I've gone to the Doctor or E.R. so many times I've lost count. They always perform this test, regardless of the problem. I suppose if one's reflex response is normal, it rules out a number of possible concerns.

I was very curious to learn the correct answer for this one, as Paul Westphal went to my high school in Redondo Beach, CA. He went on to play and coach professionally in the NBA (pro basketball team) his sister attended the school at the same time I did.
