We always should remember those who died fighting for our freedom. We owe them all, known and unknown, a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Both uniforms worn by Evzones are ceremonial. The white one ( worn by the Klefts and the Revolution of 1821 fighters) is the most beautiful, especially the one worn by Officers (ressembling the one worn by Gen. George Karaiskakis who was shot dead on 1827). The other one worn in weekdays is dark blue and is similar to what the hero of the Macedonian Struggle Paul Melas used to wear (shot dead in 1904). The summer weekdays Evzones wear a light khaki uniform similar to what the Evzonic Regimental soldiers used to wear during the Balkan Wars, the WW I and the Asia Minor campaign. The name of the white uniform is Foustanella and of the two others is Doulamas.

The ceremonial klepht uniform is only worn on Sunday. The rest of the week they wear regular uniforms. The Sunday changing of the guards ceremony is not to be missed if you visit Athens. Also. unlike the Queens guards in England, the Greek guards will interact with people, especially attractive young women!

damnpaterfamilias, have to look up the rest of the lyrics... 'nestled in your hollow shoulder' seems to refer to a rifle.

Giggle pig, unfortunately usa has no idea about what is freedom and history. A savagely grasped land from natives. Artifical state which has no history except wars and slavery. Whole country is like a Hollwood studio.!!!

Glory2J, thank you very much - I am American and also have a great deal of respect for those who fought for our freedoms. Also, I married a Filipino and truly admire them for their work ethic and beauty. Unfortunately, our country is filled with people who have no respect for our past and are willing to give up every freedom we have so that feelings won’t be hurt and for the illusion of us small bit of security. Once the light of freedom goes out in America, this world will become a much darker place.

the Greeks found him using resources and the students are surely privileged enough to admire such a man.

So when was it built?

This is the first I’ve ever heard of this too. It does appear to be an honor for the soldiers.
