Which movie character did both Steve Martin and Peter Sellers portray?

What Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards did with those original films was nothing short of brilliant. I thought the Steve Martin versions were painful to watch. Martin used to be so funny, but as a great comedian himself, he should of known better than to take on a role like that.
