How many species of snakes are known to live in the U.S. state of Florida?
Correct answer: 50 species

AutumnalConcrete2
I live in South Florida and they just found a 17 foot python less than 500 yards from my house. Pythons are destroying the ecosystem, really dessimating it...no cats, no raccoons, rabbits etc. Neighbor saw one watching her dog....need I say more? Yikes!

Canis Lupus
Diver Dan, I was wondering why this had not been mentioned earlier. Of course, they are not native to Florida. But careless and incredibly brainless amateur snake owners just dumped the pythons in the swamp anyway when the snakes became too large or too difficult to handle.

Player #1126073,
Don’t feel sorry for us Floridians, while half the nation is up to its ears in snow it was 76 degrees C today LOL

meldawg
AutumnalConcrete2, But pythons are NOT native to Florida. Those and boas have been "put out" because folks buy snakes and then decide they can't handle them or no longer desire them as the novelty wanes, then release them into the general public, swamps and forestry areas. It's shameful folks do that because you are correct...destroying the ecosystem

Yuck and triple yuck! l feel.sorry for Floridians

At least now I know which part of the state to avoid if I should ever visit there. The state should offer a bounty for all invasive snakes and prohibit the sales of these critters

Lionessa
According to LiveScience.com, pythons have been sighted in the Everglades since 1979, almost certainly released by pet owners. This population grew slowly until it exploded in the 90s. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 contributed to this number.

Wannabe Vulcan
Su Xieli, big as some of them are, Burmese Pythons CAN be more docile than a lot of other snakes (with exceptions, obviously).

Not all is true about their locations throughout the state. I lived in the panhandle of the state for 16 years and had found all the poisonous ones on my property. I lived 15 miles south of the Alabama state line.

Canis Lupus, I live in Rhode Island. I found a small very flat alligator in my street. It looks like it was headed for the reservoir. It wouldn’t have lasted through the winter. Some idot must have thought it would be fun to have until it to big. No idea how it got loose.
