L. Frank Baum was in Aberdeen, South Dakota when he wrote it. There is a children's park in tribute to this near Aberdeen called Storybook Land.

I never heard of Ozma, a princess Baum included in every one of the Oz books, except the very first, the one in which his reputation rests. Wonder how Hollywood would have written her into the story. We don't want a young princess to detract from our heroine by stealing the spotlight. I only found out about Ozma by doing New York Times crossword puzzles.

Books still sell after they’ve reached the public domain. Just means the author doesn’t get paid, or actually their estate as the copyright lasts until 50 years from death
